Annual Pecan Show Held


The Glasscock County Cooperative Extension Office held its annual pecan show at the Community Center Nov. 2, with a theme of "Pecans with a Holiday Flair."

Food category winners were: Adult Entries, Grand Champion --Carolyn Strube, Pecan Pie; Reserve Champion --Debbie Schraeder, Ribbon Coffee Cake; Youth Entries, Grand Champion --Blaine Walker, Blaine's Rum Cake; Reserve Champion --Dusty Walker, Pumpkin Tea Bread.

Pecan entry winners, who advance to regional competition in Abilene, were: Champion Commercial--Kevin Hirt, Desirable variety; Reserve Champion Commercial--James Schwartz, Cheyenne variety; Champion Classic--Kevin Hirt, Podsednik variety; Reserve Champion Classic--Eugene Hirt, Burkett variety; Champion Seedling--James Schwartz; Reserve Champion Seedling--Kevin Hirt (does not advance).

                The GCISD third grade class presented a play entitled “Discouraged Pilgrim Thanksgiving,” directed by Phyllis Byrne. High school guitar class students Dusty Walker and Logan Willis presented “Ghost Riders in the Sky” and “Dueling Banjos,” accompanied and directed by Robin Gray.  Two FFA Leadership Contest teams presented their projects. The Public Relations Team consists of Jared Bradford, Blake Chudej and Colton Schwartz. The Ag Issues Team consists of Travis Coates, Dusty Walker, Garrett Kellermeier, and Colby Hirt.

A food auction was conducted to raise money to start The Glasscock County Pecan Show Scholarship Fund. Applications for the 2004 scholarship will be available in the spring at the high school counselor's office for graduating seniors who wish to apply.  The $250 scholarship will be presented at graduation.
